Woman, 20, sentencedto 'gang rape' by village court in east India
Punished for having arelationship with a man from another village

A 20-year-old womanhas been left fighting for her life in hospital today after a kangaroo court inIndia ordered her to be gang-raped for having an affair with a youth fromanother village.
The brutal punishmentwas allegedly carried out by the very same ‘court’ which found her guilty in avillage near Suri in west Bengal state, 150 miles from Kolkata, police said.
Police said that all13 accused men - ten of whom made up the kangaroo court - have since beenarrested for rape. Among them is the village headman.
Despite her criticalcondition and clinging to life, the female victim managed to tell her story toThe Times of India.
'I had an affair witha man,' she told the paper.
'We were dragged to agathering where our community headman was present. They told me to pay50,000 rupees (490). When I said I couldn't, they brutalised me.'
A doctor told thepaper that the young woman was alive 'only because she is a tough tribal girl.'
The woman'sdistraught mother said that 'the crime was committed by our own people.'
She added: 'Theytortured my daughter and dumped her home late at night. We were threatened notto go to police.
'We tried to go toBolpur hospital, but they stopped us.'
The paper said thewoman was raped in a village in the Labhpur police station area.
It was on Mondayafternoon that a group of tribal men found the woman sitting with her lover,who is from Chowhatta village and of a different religion.
They dragged the twoof them to a religious place known as a 'than' where a makeshift court washastily put together on the orders of the tribal chieftan.
Police said that theyouth was told to pay a fine of ￡245 and warned that if he did not pay, menfrom the village would 'have fun with the girl.
With no moneyforthcoming, the woman was allegedly tied to a tree before she was forced intoa shed and raped continuously until Tuesday morning.
The woman's familywere forced to remain indoors throughout Tuesday, doing their best to care fortheir daughter who was bleeding from severe injuries.
According to the Timesof India, the family managed to slip out late on Wednesday afternoon and takethe woman to a health centre, where doctors said she should be takenimmediately to the nearest hospital.
But from thathospital she was shifted on to Suri hospital in a critical condition at night.
'This is when thecrime came to light,' said police officer Prashanta Chowdhury. 'She was gangraped and the details are yet to be investigated.'
The shocking incidentis not the first time that a woman has been punished for having an affair inthe area.
Four years ago ateenage girl was stripped and forced to walk naked through four villages,during which hundreds of people molested her and mocked her.
They even filmed herwith mobile phones, which resulted in police moving into the area and makingarrests.
The girl received abravery award from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and today she lives in astate-run welfare home.

This is not a COURT,& not a proper village either. This occurred in the locales of tribals in aremote area. ____ Tribals have own customs which is protected from themainstream, & since they are secluded & protected, the government allowthem hu ge freedom (unless they flout the law as in this case) ____ The DMrecently reported that many parts of Britain practice honor-killing & FGM._____ Rather than calling these 'British customs' as they are happeningrampantly in British areas, the report properly points out that these are areaswhere British law has little effect as they are dominated by certain immigrants___ Similarly, it is important to point out that this so called 'court' and'villages' are actually primitive tribals, whose customs are archaic. __Painting this as an 'Indian' court is incorrect.
The way women aretreated there is despicable. And to think, all this stink being raised by Indiaabout their diplomat being "strip searched" in New York... I'm surethe only reason anyone cares is because the diplomat is of a higher caste. I havevisited India, and I love it, but they need to sort themselves out and stepinto the 21st century.
